Sacramento, CA – A stretch of unusually chilly mornings is settling across Northern California from Saturday, Oct. 24, through Friday, Oct. 30, with temperatures dropping into the lower 20s in some mountain communities just ahead of Halloween on Saturday, Oct. 31.
According to the National Weather Service in Sacramento, overnight temperatures will trend cooler through the weekend and into next week, particularly across higher elevation mountains and basins where freezing and below freezing conditions are expected.
Some of the coldest temperatures are forecast for Burney, where morning lows could reach 22 degrees Saturday and again Tuesday. Quincy is expected to drop to 24 degrees Saturday and 23 degrees Tuesday, while Donner Pass could fall to 29 degrees Tuesday.
Lower elevations will experience a less dramatic but noticeable cooling trend.
Sacramento is forecast to see morning lows between 47 and 51 degrees through Monday before temperatures settle near 47 degrees Tuesday and Wednesday. Redding could drop to 45 degrees Tuesday, while Chico is expected to reach 46 degrees.
Stockton and Modesto will remain comparatively warmer, with overnight temperatures generally hovering around 50 degrees.
Halloween Weekend Outlook
The timing is particularly important for residents preparing for Halloween celebrations Saturday, Oct. 31.
Although the current National Weather Service temperature outlook ends Friday morning, Oct. 30, the cooling trend leading into Halloween weekend could mean chilly conditions for early outdoor preparations and morning activities.
However, Halloween night temperatures have not yet been included in the published forecast, and specific trick or treating conditions remain uncertain.
Residents traveling through mountain passes should prepare for colder early morning conditions, particularly where temperatures approach or fall below freezing.
