Los Angeles, CA – A prolonged heatwave is expected to begin Friday across Southern California, with unusually hot conditions potentially continuing through at least Thursday.
According to the National Weather Service in Los Angeles/Oxnard, an Extreme Heat Watch is in effect from Friday through Thursday, Oct. 2 8, for much of Los Angeles, Ventura and Santa Barbara counties. Forecasters said the hot pattern could persist beyond Thursday.
High temperatures of 95 to above 105 degrees are expected to become common across many areas, including some coastal plains. Warm overnight conditions are also anticipated, although the Weather Service expects the air to be less humid than during earlier heat events this year.
Forecast temperatures rise sharply Friday and Saturday in several communities. Downtown Los Angeles is forecast to reach 96 Friday and 100 Saturday, while Pasadena could climb from 98 to 100.
Woodland Hills is forecast to reach 104 Friday and 106 Saturday. Ojai could reach 100 Friday and 102 Saturday, while Santa Clarita is forecast near 99 Friday and 100 Saturday.
Coastal communities should also warm, though temperatures will generally remain lower. Santa Monica is forecast to reach 88 Friday and 94 Saturday, while Ventura is expected near 83 and 86.
The Weather Service said the prolonged heat could create a high risk for heat illness. It is also highlighting a high risk for large and fast moving fires in valley and mountain areas, urging residents to use caution with potential ignition sources.
Forecasters recommend making plans to stay cool and checking on neighbors and loved ones during the extended event.
The heat is expected to begin Friday and continue through at least next Thursday, with residents advised to monitor updated forecasts and any changes to the Extreme Heat Watch.
