Los Angeles, CA – Los Angeles County officials are urging residents to take precautions during hot weather, including limiting strenuous outdoor activity and knowing where to find an air conditioned cooling center.
According to the Los Angeles County Sheriff 's Department, residents should drink water regularly and take breaks in air conditioned spaces during periods of peak heat. The department also encouraged people to check on older adults, neighbors and loved ones who may be particularly vulnerable to high temperatures.
Officials stressed that children and pets should never be left inside parked vehicles, even for a short period. Temperatures inside vehicles can rise rapidly and create dangerous or potentially deadly conditions.
For residents who do not have adequate access to air conditioning, Los Angeles County operates cooling centers. People can call 211 or visit ready.lacounty.gov/heat to locate a nearby facility. Officials recommend checking a cooling center's operating hours before traveling.
The Sheriff's Department also highlighted symptoms that could indicate a serious heat related emergency. Anyone who becomes confused, collapses or shows signs of suspected heat stroke requires immediate medical attention, and officials advise calling 911.
Heat can become especially dangerous for older adults, young children, people with certain health conditions, outdoor workers and those without reliable access to air conditioning.
Residents planning outdoor activities should consider reducing their exposure during the hottest part of the day, staying hydrated and taking frequent breaks in cooler locations.
The Sheriff's Department's message emphasizes three priorities as temperatures climb across the Los Angeles area: stay cool, stay hydrated and stay connected with people who may need additional assistance.
