Hanford, CA – Residents across California's Sierra Nevada and Tehachapi Range are being urged to prepare for critical wildfire conditions beginning early Thursday, Oct. 15, as strong winds, extremely dry vegetation and low humidity combine to increase the potential for rapidly spreading fires.
According to the National Weather Service in Hanford, a Red Flag Warning will take effect at 3 a.m. Thursday and remain in place until 10 p.m. Friday, Oct. 16, across the affected mountain regions.
Strong Winds and Dry Conditions Raise Fire Danger
Forecasters expect sustained easterly winds of 15 to 25 mph, with gusts reaching 30 to 40 mph.
Relative humidity could fall to 25% or lower, creating conditions favorable for the rapid spread of wildfires.
The Weather Service identifies critically dry vegetation, gusty northeast to easterly winds and very low humidity as the primary concerns.
These conditions could allow newly ignited fires to grow quickly, particularly in areas with abundant dry brush, grass and timber.
Residents Urged to Prepare Before Thursday
Officials recommend that residents in affected communities review evacuation routes and prepare emergency supply kits before the strongest fire weather develops.
Homeowners should also clear dry vegetation away from structures when it is safe to do so.
Outdoor burning should be avoided, and residents must follow any local burn restrictions.
The Weather Service specifically advises against mowing dry grass during dangerous fire conditions because equipment can generate sparks.
Drivers should also inspect vehicles for loose chains or metal parts that could drag along roadways and ignite roadside vegetation.
Warning Continues Through Friday Night
Critical fire weather conditions are expected to persist through much of Thursday and Friday before the warning expires at 10 p.m. Friday.
Residents should monitor local emergency officials for evacuation information and report any signs of smoke or fire immediately.
A Red Flag Warning indicates weather conditions favorable for dangerous wildfire behavior; it does not mean a wildfire is already burning.
