Eureka, California – Residents across interior northwestern California should avoid activities that can create sparks through Saturday as gusty winds and low afternoon humidity increase the potential for fires to start and spread.
According to the National Weather Service in Eureka, elevated fire weather conditions will continue across the interior through Saturday. West to northwest winds of 10 to 20 mph are expected Thursday and Friday as daytime relative humidity falls to 10% to 20%.
Lake, eastern Trinity and eastern Mendocino counties face a stronger wind threat Saturday. West to northwest winds are expected to reach 25 to 35 mph during the afternoon, while relative humidity ranges from 20% to 30%.
The combination of dry vegetation, low humidity and increasing wind can make a small ignition harder to contain. People traveling or working outdoors should keep vehicles off dry grass, properly dispose of cigarettes and matches, and avoid outdoor equipment that produces sparks.
