Bishop, CA – Residents across northern Owens Valley in Inyo County are being urged to prepare for the first freeze of the season as a Freeze Warning takes effect for the early morning hours of Wednesday, October 14.
According to the National Weather Service in Las Vegas, a previously issued Freeze Watch has been upgraded to a Freeze Warning, signaling increased confidence that freezing temperatures will develop across the affected area.
The warning covers northern Owens Valley, including the Bishop area of eastern California, where residents could experience the season's first widespread freezing conditions in locations covered by the alert.
The National Weather Service announced the upgrade Tuesday, October 13, giving residents an opportunity to protect vulnerable property before temperatures drop overnight.
Officials are emphasizing three important precautions: protecting pets, sensitive plants and exposed plumbing.
Outdoor pets should have access to adequate shelter from the cold, while residents with temperature sensitive vegetation should consider moving plants indoors or covering them before nightfall.
Exposed outdoor pipes and irrigation equipment may also require protection, particularly in locations where temperatures remain below freezing long enough to cause damage.
The first freeze of the season can be especially important for gardeners and homeowners who have not yet prepared for colder overnight conditions.
Although the warning specifically targets northern Owens Valley, residents throughout surrounding eastern California communities should monitor their local forecasts as colder weather settles into the region.
The National Weather Service is encouraging residents to use Tuesday afternoon to complete preparations rather than waiting until temperatures begin falling overnight.
The Freeze Warning is focused on early Wednesday morning, October 14. Residents should continue checking updated weather information for exact temperatures, warning expiration times and any changes in the affected area.
