Auburn, CA – Elevated fire weather conditions are continuing across Northern California's Sierra Nevada and foothill communities Saturday, October 17, as dry air and gusty winds increase the potential for fires to start and spread. Residents are being urged to use caution with outdoor activities that could produce sparks.
According to the National Weather Service NWS in Sacramento, California, daytime relative humidity levels are expected to remain between 10% and 20%, while occasional wind gusts could reach 25 mph across the affected region.
Saturday, October 17: Dry Winds Increase Fire Concerns
North to east winds will continue across the Sierra Nevada and surrounding foothills, with western portions of the affected area potentially experiencing gusts between 15 and 25 mph.
Communities including Auburn, CA, in Placer County; Placerville, CA, in El Dorado County; Grass Valley and Nevada City, CA, in Nevada County; and Jackson, CA, in Amador County, are within the broader foothill region where residents should remain aware of dry conditions.
The NWS reports that relative humidity has already dropped into the teens and 20s in parts of Northern California.
Saturday Night, October 17 18: Limited Humidity Recovery
Overnight humidity recovery is forecast between 20% and 50%, meaning some areas may remain relatively dry even after temperatures decrease.
These conditions can leave grasses, brush and other vegetation vulnerable to ignition, particularly where dry fuels are present.
Fire Safety Precautions for Residents
The National Weather Service recommends several precautions during elevated fire weather conditions:
Keep vehicles off dry grass. Properly extinguish cigarettes and matches. Avoid outdoor equipment that could create sparks. Remain alert for smoke or signs of new fires. Although the NWS graphic categorizes the overall weather risk as minor, the combination of low humidity and gusty winds can still make accidental fires easier to start.
Residents across the Sierra foothills should monitor updated forecasts and local fire agency announcements throughout Saturday, October 17.
