Dodge County, WI – Wisconsin drivers are being urged to watch for increased deer movement Monday as the annual mating season brings heightened collision risks to area roadways. Sheriff's officials report six vehicle deer crashes in the past 24 hours and have assigned deer activity a high rating.
According to the Dodge County Sheriff 's Office, deputies are launching daily deer movement reports throughout the fall mating season, commonly known as the rut, to help motorists and hunters understand when deer activity is most intense.
As of Monday, Nov. 2, the department reported six car deer accidents within the previous 24 hours , giving local deer movement a rating of four out of five stars.
The rating indicates elevated activity and increased potential for deer to cross roadways unexpectedly.
Sheriff's officials explained that deputies frequently respond to vehicle deer collisions, allowing the department to track patterns in reported crashes throughout the rut.
Last year, the county's highest single day total occurred Nov. 5, when authorities recorded 12 car deer accidents in one day .
With that date approaching again this week, officials are encouraging motorists to remain especially vigilant.
The Sheriff's Office plans to publish updated crash totals and deer activity ratings at approximately 10 a.m. daily over the coming weeks.
The reports will use a one to five star scale to identify days with greater deer movement, providing information for both drivers and hunting enthusiasts.
Deer activity commonly increases during the fall breeding season, when animals may move more frequently across rural highways and wooded corridors.
Motorists should reduce speed in areas with limited visibility, remain alert near fields and tree lines, and use extra caution during dawn and dusk.
Drivers who encounter a deer should brake firmly when safe and avoid sudden swerving that could cause a more serious crash.
Although Monday's figures specifically reflect Dodge County, deer related driving hazards can affect other parts of Wisconsin during the seasonal rut.
Officials encourage residents to follow daily updates as November deer activity continues.
