Winnipeg, MB – A Winnipeg investigation into alleged grandparent scams that cost three older adults more than $37,000 has led to fraud, drug and sexual assault related charges against a 29 year old Edmonton man, police said.
According to the Winnipeg Police Service, all three alleged fraud victims were in their 80s and received calls in August from someone pretending to be a grandchild who supposedly needed money for bail.
Police said one victim was allegedly contacted between Aug. 17 and Aug. 22, with a man visiting the residence four times to collect cash along with gold and silver coins. A second victim allegedly handed over money Aug. 18, while a third allegedly made payments during encounters Aug. 20 and Aug. 21.
Investigators eventually arrested Daniel Edward Warren, 29, of Edmonton , police said. Officers reported finding evidence linked to all three victims during the investigation.
Warren was charged with one count of fraud over $5,000, two counts of fraud under $5,000 and possession of scheduled substances identified by police as methamphetamine and fentanyl. He was detained in custody.
Police said the financial crimes investigation also determined Warren had allegedly traveled from Edmonton to Winnipeg with a teenage girl and had been staying at a short term rental.
The girl later reported that Warren allegedly sexually assaulted her at the rental and that she did not have the means to return to Edmonton on her own, according to police.
On Aug. 23, Sex Crimes Unit investigators arrested Warren at the Winnipeg Remand Centre on additional charges of sexual assault, sexual assault with a weapon and sexual interference.
Police said he remained in custody and the girl was safely returned home.
The allegations have not been proven in court. Warren is presumed innocent unless proven guilty.
