West Virginia — Frost covered lawns, freezing temperatures and a sharp November warmup are creating a dramatic weather turnaround across Charleston. Residents have hours to protect sensitive plants before another round of potentially damaging cold arrives.
According to the National Weather Service in Charleston, a Freeze Warning takes effect at midnight Saturday night and continues until 10 a.m. Sunday.
Temperatures as low as 30 degrees are expected across portions of West Virginia, southeast Ohio and northeast Kentucky.
The warning follows a Frost Advisory that remains in effect until 9 a.m. Saturday, with temperatures as low as 33 degrees capable of producing frost.
Freeze Warning Covers Multiple States The National Weather Service warns that freezing conditions could kill crops, damage sensitive vegetation and potentially affect unprotected outdoor plumbing.
Affected communities include Charleston, Huntington, South Charleston, Hurricane, Wayne and surrounding areas.
Residents should protect tender plants before temperatures fall Saturday evening.
Cover vulnerable vegetation, move potted plants indoors and check exposed outdoor plumbing.
Saturday afternoon offers a brief break, with temperatures reaching approximately 53 degrees under increasing clouds.
However, temperatures fall toward 34 degrees Saturday night, with patchy frost developing after 4 a.m. Sunday.
The broader warning area could experience temperatures near 30 degrees.
Sunday Begins a Significant Temperature Rebound Despite the freezing start, Sunday brings sunshine and a high near 60 degrees.
That creates a substantial temperature recovery within hours.
Monday continues the warming trend, reaching approximately 63 degrees after early patchy frost.
By Tuesday, afternoon temperatures could climb to 69 degrees.
That's a 39 degree difference between the warning area's expected 30 degree minimum and Tuesday's projected high.
The rapid temperature turnaround highlights November's changing weather pattern across the Kanawha Valley.
What Drivers and Homeowners Should Know Drivers traveling Interstate 64, Interstate 77 and Interstate 79 should remain alert for isolated frost on exposed surfaces during colder morning periods.
However, widespread icy road conditions are not indicated in the current forecast.
No snow or tornado threat is identified for Charleston during the five day outlook.
The greatest immediate concern remains damage to vegetation and exposed outdoor plumbing.
Residents can use the warmer afternoons to clear fallen leaves and secure outdoor belongings before colder weather returns later in November.
