Charleston, West Virginia – Heavy rain could trigger flash flooding Wednesday, with a Flood Watch covering parts of West Virginia through the evening.
According to the National Weather Service in Charleston, additional rounds of showers and thunderstorms are possible Wednesday, with activity particularly possible during the evening. Excessive runoff could flood rivers, creeks, streams and other low lying or flood prone locations.
The Flood Watch includes a swath of southern West Virginia extending from areas near Huntington south and east toward Logan, Beckley and the Virginia border. The Weather Service map also shows the watch reaching communities near Grundy in southwestern Virginia.
Charleston is outside the shaded watch area on the Weather Service map, but additional showers and thunderstorms remain possible across the broader region Wednesday.
The primary concern in the watch area is heavy rain falling quickly enough to overwhelm drainage and send waterways higher. Drivers should use extra caution around low lying roads and avoid attempting to cross flooded pavement. Water depth and road damage can be difficult to judge.
Residents near creeks, streams and other flood prone areas should monitor water levels and be prepared for changing conditions as additional storms develop. The Weather Service specifically highlights high water and minor flooding as potential impacts.
Conditions improve Thursday as drier weather moves into the region. That drier pattern is expected to provide relief through the weekend. Until then, the greatest concern remains additional heavy rain and possible flash flooding through Wednesday evening.
