Yakima, WA – The Yakima County Sheriff 's Office reported a successful resolution to a hit and run investigation this week, citing the instrumental role of modern technology in solving the crime. Authorities say that the use of an automatic license plate reader ALPR was key to debunking a false report and securing an arrest.
According to the Sheriff's Office, deputies were initially tasked with investigating a hit and run collision where the vehicle had been abandoned and the driver had fled the scene. A short time later, the registered owner of the vehicle contacted the office, claiming his car had been stolen. However, upon interviewing the owner, a deputy noted inconsistencies in the story and observed that the owner appeared injured.
Attribution for the success of the case goes to the department's use of the Flock ALPR system, which provided additional evidence linking the owner to the scene of the crime. Under questioning, the owner ultimately admitted to being the driver at the time of the accident and subsequently fleeing. He was promptly taken into custody.
The department emphasized that this case highlights the effectiveness of modern investigation tools like ALPRs in providing crucial leads. Officials reaffirmed that the use of such technology in public spaces is conducted in a legal and ethical manner, with full regard for constitutional privacy standards.
