WAKEFIELD, VA — Residents across eastern and central Virginia are preparing for an unusual stretch of October warmth this week, with temperatures potentially reaching 90 degrees Wednesday, October 14, before much cooler fall weather arrives over the weekend.
According to the National Weather Service in Wakefield, a few light showers could linger early Monday, October 12, before conditions turn mostly dry for much of the upcoming workweek. Temperatures will steadily climb, bringing summerlike warmth and potentially near record highs by midweek.
Warm Weather Builds Through Tuesday
Monday will feature mostly cloudy and breezy conditions, with afternoon temperatures ranging from 74 to 79 degrees.
By Tuesday, October 13, sunshine returns as highs climb between 80 and 85 degrees. Overnight temperatures will generally remain in the lower 60s.
The warmer conditions will set the stage for an even hotter Wednesday.
Near Record Highs Possible Wednesday
Wednesday, October 14, is expected to be the warmest day of the forecast period.
The National Weather Service predicts sunny skies and afternoon highs between 85 and 90 degrees across the region.
Those temperatures could approach daily records in some communities, creating an unusually summerlike afternoon for mid October.
Residents planning outdoor activities should prepare for the unexpected warmth.
Cooler Weather Approaches This Weekend
Changes begin Thursday, October 15, as clouds increase and a chance of showers develops across northern portions of the forecast area.
Thursday highs are expected to range from 75 to 80 degrees in northern locations and 80 to 85 degrees farther south.
The National Weather Service also indicates that much cooler temperatures are expected this weekend, although specific weekend highs were not included in the four day outlook.
Residents across the Richmond, Petersburg and Hampton Roads areas should monitor updated forecasts as the timing and extent of the cooldown become clearer.
