Utah County, UT – A public meeting over proposed data center regulations turned confrontational Tuesday, Oct. 20, when deputies removed several attendees from a Utah County Planning Commission meeting, resulting in one arrest and two citations.
According to the Utah County Sheriff 's Office, commissioners were discussing ordinances concerning data centers when several attendees became disruptive and were warned that continued interruptions could result in removal.
Following a commission vote, additional disruptions prompted commissioners to request assistance from sheriff's deputies.
Confrontation Leads to Arrest
Deputies initially asked one man to leave the meeting. He complied without incident and was not cited.
Authorities said a woman subsequently refused repeated requests to leave and allegedly argued with deputies.
When an officer attempted to escort her from the seating area, the woman allegedly struck the deputy in the groin.
Two other individuals reportedly grabbed the woman in an effort to prevent her removal.
Deputies escorted all three individuals into the lobby, where officers attempted to separate them.
During the encounter, the woman allegedly struck the deputy again, causing the officer to fall to the ground.
Three People Face Legal Consequences
The woman was arrested and booked into the Utah County Jail on suspicion of disrupting a meeting, a Class A misdemeanor; interference with an arresting officer, a Class B misdemeanor; and assault on a police officer, a Class B misdemeanor.
The two other individuals were released with citations for disrupting a meeting and interference with an arrest.
After being handcuffed, the woman reported jaw pain and requested to use the restroom. Provo Fire EMS evaluated her and found no immediate injuries requiring emergency treatment, according to the sheriff's office.
Data Center Debate Continues
Despite the disturbance, officials said numerous attendees were later able to express concerns about data centers during the designated public comment period.
The sheriff's office confirmed that supervisory personnel are reviewing the incident.
Authorities have not publicly identified the individuals involved in the release.
The allegations have not been proven in court, and those accused are presumed innocent.
