Wisconsin Woman Dies Following Friday Crash Involving Amish Buggy

Tomah, WI – A tragic traffic collision resulted in the death of a 37-year-old woman from Wilton on Friday, September 4, 2026. The Monroe County 911 Communications Center received the report of the crash at approximately 3:35 p.m., noting the incident occurred on State Hwy 131 between County Hwy A and Irondale Ave in the Township of Tomah.
According to the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office, investigators determined that both a 2025 Volkswagen Atlas and an Amish buggy were traveling southbound up a hill when the collision took place. The driver of the Volkswagen, a 38-year-old woman from Tomah, reported that she experienced a sneezing fit immediately before the impact and did not see the buggy. She was briefly trapped in her vehicle but managed to exit before being transported to a local hospital, where she was later released.
The accident resulted in the hospitalization of five other individuals, all of whom were occupants of the buggy. Their ages ranged from 18 months to 24 years old, and they sustained serious injuries. Despite efforts by emergency responders to transport the victims, one of the occupants of the buggy succumbed to her injuries and died. The names of those involved have not been released at this time.
State Hwy 131 was closed for approximately two hours as emergency crews cleared the scene. Agencies providing assistance to the Sheriff’s Office included the Wisconsin State Patrol, Wisconsin DNR, Tomah Ambulance, Wilton Ambulance, Ft. McCoy Ambulance, Oakdale Fire Department, Wilton Fire Department, EmpliflyAir, and the Monroe County Medical Examiner’s Office. The investigation remains ongoing.
