Philadelphia, PA – A chilly October night could bring the season’s touch of frost to parts of Pennsylvania and New Jersey by Wednesday morning, another reminder that colder nights and winter weather become increasingly common this time of year.
The National Weather Service in Philadelphia/Mount Holly said patchy frost is possible overnight into Wednesday, Oct. 7, as skies clear and winds become calm. A Frost Advisory is in effect for Sussex County, New Jersey, while patchy frost could develop as far south as interior southern New Jersey.
Some of the coldest temperatures are expected north and west of Philadelphia. The NWS projects a low near 36 degrees around Sussex, 37 at Mount Pocono, 39 around Morristown and 40 near Allentown.
Philadelphia is expected to fall to around 43 degrees. Trenton is also projected near 43, while Wilmington could reach 43 and Reading around 40.
The coast should remain considerably milder. Atlantic City is projected around 48 degrees, with Cape May near 51.
The colder night comes during a time of year when residents should increasingly be prepared for frost and eventually winter weather. Farther west, forecasters in Colorado are already monitoring a separate storm that could bring accumulating snow to parts of the Continental Divide next week. The National Weather Service in Pueblo has emphasized that winter weather during October is not unusual, especially in the mountains.
That Colorado system is not responsible for Wednesday morning’s Northeast chill , and current guidance does not establish that it will eventually affect Pennsylvania or New Jersey. It does, however, illustrate the broader seasonal transition underway as October advances.
Residents in frost prone areas should consider protecting tender vegetation overnight. By Wednesday morning, temperatures are expected to range from the mid 30s in the coldest inland locations to the lower 50s along parts of the coast.
