St. Louis County, MO – Two 20 year old women are facing felony charges after an off duty police officer was allegedly assaulted during a confrontation at a St. Louis County business Sunday, October 11. Authorities say the officer suffered injuries requiring hospitalization.
According to the St. Louis County Police Department , prosecutors charged Shaniya Lewis of St. Louis and Nayonna Griffin of Florissant on Sunday with second degree assault of a special victim and resisting or interfering with a felony arrest.
The incident allegedly occurred at a business in the 12100 block of Lusher Road, where an off duty Hillsdale Police Department officer was working a secondary employment assignment.
Court documents summarized by police allege Griffin began throwing items at the officer, prompting him to approach her.
Lewis then allegedly intervened, struggled with the officer and threw him to the ground.
Authorities allege Lewis repeatedly punched the officer while Griffin stomped on his head.
During the struggle, Lewis allegedly grabbed the officer's firearm but was unable to remove it from its holster.
Police further allege Griffin continued resisting when responding officers attempted to detain her, grabbing an officer's hair, kicking and attempting to flee before being handcuffed.
The injured officer was transported to a hospital, although authorities did not provide details about the extent of his injuries or his condition.
Investigators say the confrontation was captured on video.
Both Lewis and Griffin are being held on $100,000 cash only bonds, with no 10% bond option, according to police.
Officers assigned to the St. Louis County Police Department's North County Precinct are leading the investigation.
The charges are accusations, and both defendants are presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in court.
