Spotsylvania County, VA – A paraeducator has been arrested after investigators alleged she pushed or shoved a 7 year old student at a Spotsylvania County elementary school, causing the child to fall to the ground.
According to the Spotsylvania Sheriff's Office , a school resource officer assigned to Wilderness Elementary School was notified Aug. 28 about an alleged assault and battery involving the student and a staff member.
Authorities said the incident allegedly occurred Aug. 25. School administrators learned about the allegations Aug. 27 and immediately reported the matter to Spotsylvania County Child Protective Services, according to the sheriff's office.
Investigators conducted interviews with the alleged victim and witnesses as part of the investigation.
The sheriff's office said 43 year old Kimberly Smith of Stafford County, a paraeducator, was escorting the child to have school pictures taken when she was allegedly observed pushing or shoving the student.
Authorities allege the contact caused the 7 year old to fall to the ground.
Following the investigation, Smith was charged with assault and battery of a child and arrested Thursday, Oct. 1.
Smith was held at the Rappahannock Regional Jail on a $1,500 secured bond, according to the sheriff's office.
Authorities did not provide additional details about whether the child suffered injuries.
