Spotsylvania County, VA — A police pursuit in Northern Virginia ended with a cruiser collision, an armed standoff and the arrest of a Woodbridge man after deputies recovered firearms and narcotics from his vehicle Saturday.
According to the Spotsylvania County Sheriff 's Office, deputies attempted to stop a white Dodge Challenger on Piedmont Drive on Oct. 17. The driver allegedly fled, prompting a brief pursuit that deputies discontinued because of traffic conditions.
A second deputy later located the vehicle near Brock Road and Catharpin Road and attempted another traffic stop. Authorities said the driver again refused to stop.
Deputies deployed spike strips, deflating the vehicle's tires. At the intersection of Brock Road and Gordon Road, the driver allegedly attempted to maneuver around deputies but turned into the path of another patrol cruiser.
Following a minor collision, the vehicle came to a stop.
Armed Standoff Follows Collision
Deputies reported seeing a firearm on the dashboard within the driver's reach, triggering a tense standoff.
Authorities coordinated their response and negotiated with the suspect, who eventually surrendered without further incident.
Investigators identified the driver as Terrell Downing, 38, of Woodbridge, Virginia.
The Sheriff's Office reported recovering two firearms and narcotics from the vehicle.
Multiple Felony Charges Filed
Downing faces numerous charges, including two counts of felony eluding, two counts of possession of Schedule I or II narcotics, firearm possession by a nonviolent felon, ammunition possession by a nonviolent felon, possession of a firearm while possessing Schedule I or II narcotics, and felony obstruction of justice.
Additional charges include misdemeanor obstruction, possession of Schedule III narcotics and two counts of driving without a license.
Downing was transported to Rappahannock Regional Jail, where authorities said he was held without bond.
No deputies or civilians were injured, according to the Sheriff's Office.
The department thanked motorists who stopped or yielded during the incident, allowing deputies to resolve the situation safely.
The charges are allegations, and Downing is presumed innocent unless proven guilty.
