Spokane Valley, WA – Local law enforcement agencies, including the Spokane County Sheriff ’s Office, responded to an emergency situation at Evergreen Middle School , located at 14221 E. 16th Avenue, on Tuesday, September 8, 2026. Deputies arrived shortly after a report was received at 11:30 AM regarding a suspicious male walking across a football field toward the school campus.
According to the Spokane County Sheriff’s Office, the caller described the male as being in his 20s, approximately 6 foot 6, and wearing a green trench coat. The caller alleged the suspect was armed with a Glock 19 handgun. School administration quickly enacted security protocols, placing the facility into lockdown upon notification of the potential threat.
Deputies reported that the suspect approached an arriving School Resource Deputy and, after a confrontation, the suspect was shot. Despite the administration of immediate medical aid, the suspect was pronounced deceased at the scene. No injuries to students, staff, or faculty were reported, and all children were later reunited with their families at a local church.
The Spokane Regional Explosive Disposal Unit EDU was called to inspect a bag believed to have been discarded by the suspect near the school. Technicians performed a controlled disruption of the bag as a safety precaution; however, an inspection revealed that no explosive device was contained within. The Spokane Independent Investigative Response Team SIIR has taken over the investigation, and future updates regarding the identity of the deputy and the deceased suspect will be released through that entity.
