Spokane County, WA – Two children, ages 11 and 12, suffered injuries after a 17 year old boy allegedly chased them through a neighborhood and repeatedly fired a realistic looking BB pistol, striking both victims, including one in the head.
According to the Spokane County Sheriff 's Office, deputies responded to a reported assault involving a weapon near West January Drive and South West Terrace Drive in the West Plains area, west of Spokane.
Investigators learned the two younger children were walking when the older teenager allegedly approached them from behind and asked whether they wanted to come closer to examine his gun.
When the children refused, deputies said the suspect allegedly began chasing them while pointing the weapon and firing several shots.
Both children suffered minor injuries.
Teen Arrested on Four Charges
The victims reported that the suspect was accompanied by another teenager and that both were wearing camouflage clothing and helmets.
Deputies later located two 17 year olds walking along West Terrace Drive, both carrying what appeared to be pistols in holsters.
Investigators determined the weapons were BB guns.
Authorities arrested one teenager on two counts of fourth degree assault and two counts of aiming or discharging a dangerous weapon.
The second teenager was determined not to have participated in the alleged assault and was released without charges.
Previous Weapon Related Calls Raise Concerns
The Sheriff's Office revealed that deputies had previously contacted the arrested teenager during separate weapon related calls in April and May.
During one encounter, deputies reported seeing him wearing a ghillie suit while carrying a realistic looking airsoft rifle through the neighborhood.
No crimes were reported during those earlier incidents, although deputies warned him about how his actions could be perceived.
Investigators seized the 6mm CO2 BB pistol used in the alleged assault.
Rather than being booked into juvenile detention, the teenager was released into his parents' custody.
The allegations have not been proven in court.
