Southern Illinois and southeast Missouri face a dramatic change from summerlike heat to chilly weekend mornings, with patchy frost possible early Sunday as temperatures tumble across the region.
According to the National Weather Service in Paducah, a strong weather system will bring showers and thunderstorms Wednesday and Thursday before cooler air spreads across southern Illinois, southwest Indiana, western Kentucky and southeast Missouri.
The agency's hazardous weather outlook, issued Wednesday, Oct. 14, identifies patchy frost as a possibility late Saturday night into early Sunday, mainly across portions of southern Illinois and southeast Missouri.
The shift follows unusually warm conditions, with Paducah expected to reach 85 degrees Wednesday and 90 Thursday before temperatures fall sharply Friday.
Summerlike Heat Gives Way to Weekend Chill Thursday could be the final unusually warm day before the colder weather arrives.
In Paducah, temperatures are expected to reach approximately 90 degrees Thursday afternoon before falling to a high near 64 Friday.
That represents a 26 degree drop in daytime highs within 24 hours.
Friday will also bring north northwest winds around 16 mph, with gusts reaching 26 mph as cooler air moves into the region.
The National Weather Service expects temperatures to fall further Saturday, with highs near 63 degrees in Paducah.
By Saturday night, temperatures are expected to drop to approximately 40 degrees locally.
However, the broader hazardous weather outlook identifies patchy frost potential mainly across portions of southern Illinois and southeast Missouri, where conditions may differ from those in Paducah.
Residents with sensitive outdoor plants should monitor updated forecasts, particularly in rural and colder locations where frost could develop early Sunday.
Sunshine Returns as Temperatures Recover Despite the colder mornings, the weekend should bring improving weather conditions.
Saturday and Sunday are expected to be sunny in Paducah, with Sunday afternoon temperatures reaching approximately 69 degrees.
The warming trend continues Monday, when highs should approach 70 degrees.
By Tuesday, temperatures are expected to climb to around 75 degrees under mostly sunny skies.
NOAA's Weather Prediction Center attributes the broader central U.S. cooldown to strong Canadian high pressure moving southward late this week.
For the southern Illinois and western Kentucky region, the most notable development is the abrupt end to summerlike temperatures, followed by a weekend frost threat in parts of the area and a gradual return to milder afternoons.
