Tucson, AZ – Powerful winds are expected to sweep across portions of southern Arizona on Sunday, bringing gusts as high as 55 mph in some areas and raising concerns about hazardous driving, falling tree limbs and possible power outages. The strongest winds could develop near showers and thunderstorms as a weather disturbance moves through the region.
According to the National Weather Service in Tucson, Wind Advisories remain in effect Sunday, Oct. 11, across portions of Pima, Pinal and Santa Cruz counties , with different start times depending on location.
In western Pima County, the Tohono O'odham Nation and south central Pinal County, the advisory begins at 2 a.m. MST Sunday and continues until 11 p.m.
These areas, including Ajo, Sells, Organ Pipe Cactus National Monument and Picacho Peak State Park, could experience sustained south to southwest winds of 25 to 35 mph, with gusts reaching 45 to 55 mph.
Across the Tucson metropolitan area, Green Valley, Nogales, Marana, Vail, Oracle and surrounding mountain communities, the advisory runs from 7 a.m. until 11 p.m. MST Sunday .
Wind gusts in those locations could reach approximately 45 mph.
Forecasters say a strong weather disturbance along the West Coast will be reinforced by a decaying tropical system, increasing wind speeds across southern Arizona.
The strongest gusts are expected near showers and thunderstorms , where conditions could become especially hazardous for motorists.
High profile vehicles, including trucks, buses and recreational vehicles, may be particularly vulnerable to strong crosswinds.
The National Weather Service warns that unsecured outdoor objects could be blown around, tree limbs may fall and a few power outages are possible.
Residents should secure patio furniture, trash containers and other loose belongings before winds strengthen.
Drivers are encouraged to reduce speeds and use extra caution on exposed highways.
Both Wind Advisories are scheduled to expire at 11 p.m. MST Sunday , although residents should monitor updated forecasts for changing conditions.
