Loudoun County, VA – The Loudoun County Sheriff ’s Office LCSO confirmed that the body of 80 year old Carolyn Taylor was located on September 6, 2026, by a neighbor in a wooded area near her home. Ms. Taylor, who had been diagnosed with dementia, was reported missing on August 23, 2026, after she failed to return from a walk.
Following the report, the LCSO launched a massive search and rescue operation involving approximately 315 personnel, including drones, K 9 units, and aviation support from the Fairfax County Police Department. The search covered more than 6,000 acres of challenging terrain, totaling over 2,400 hours of effort from various partner agencies, including the Virginia Department of Emergency Management and regional search groups.
Sheriff Mike Chapman had appealed to the public on August 24, 2026, and again during a town hall meeting on August 26, 2026, asking neighbors to check their properties and surveillance footage for any signs of Ms. Taylor. While investigators thoroughly explored all possibilities, including foul play, all such leads were ruled out early in the process.
In a statement, the LCSO expressed its condolences to the family and friends of Ms. Taylor. The office emphasized its ongoing commitment to programs like "Project Lifesaver," a national initiative providing electronic tracking for at risk individuals with cognitive conditions.
