SCHUYLKILL COUNTY, PA – A nearly 40 year mystery surrounding a young woman found dead near Interstate 81 in Pennsylvania has taken a major turn. State police have identified the woman as an 18 year old Washington, D.C., resident who disappeared in 1986, but questions about her final days remain unanswered.
According to Pennsylvania State Police, the woman was identified as Gladys T. Johnson, also known as “Tinker,” following an investigation involving forensic genetic genealogy and assistance from the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children.
Johnson's body was discovered April 8, 1986, in a wooded area near southbound Interstate 81 at mile marker 137.2 in Kline Township, Schuylkill County, approximately two miles south of McAdoo.
At the time, investigators estimated she was between 18 and 25 years old. She was wearing only a silver friendship ring with a Florentine finish.
An autopsy found no signs of trauma. The medical examiner attributed her immediate death to adverse effects of cocaine and related complications, although the manner of death remained undetermined.
For decades, investigators pursued leads without establishing her identity.
In July 2024, authorities exhumed her remains for additional forensic examination. Genetic genealogy work began in October 2025, alongside facial reconstructions developed with assistance from the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children.
A breakthrough came in June 2026 when someone contacted the organization after seeing the reconstructed images and believed the unidentified woman could be a missing relative.
In October 2026, investigators confirmed the identification.
Police said Johnson left her Washington, D.C., residence in March 1986 to celebrate her birthday but never returned home.
The investigation remains active. Authorities are now asking anyone who knew Johnson or had contact with her before her death to come forward.
