Reidsville, NC – A North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation special agent is hospitalized after authorities say he was shot while searching for an armed suspect Saturday morning in Rockingham County. The suspect is now in custody.
According to the Rockingham County Sheriff ’s Office, deputies initially responded to a shots fired call on Walker Street in Reidsville. Authorities identified the suspect as Marvin D. White, 38.
The sheriff’s office said White allegedly began shooting at responding deputies before fleeing on foot. The SBI was called in to help locate him and process the crime scene.
Investigators eventually identified an area where White might be hiding. During the search, an SBI special agent located him and ordered him to drop his weapon, according to the sheriff’s office.
Authorities allege White instead fired at the agent, striking him in the leg. The agent returned fire, according to the sheriff’s office.
The wounded agent was transported to Moses Cone Hospital in Greensboro, where authorities said he was in stable condition. He is a 10 year SBI veteran who serves on the agency’s Special Response Team and works in the Northern Piedmont District.
White was arrested at the scene. The sheriff’s office said he will face multiple charges but did not immediately specify them in Saturday’s update.
SBI Director Chip Hawley responded to the hospital following the shooting, while Rockingham County Sheriff Billy Parker praised the response of deputies, SBI personnel and the wounded agent.
Authorities said additional information will be released as the investigation continues.
