The Center Square – Tariffs cost Georgians an estimated $4,771 per household, according to a report from the National Taxpayers Union Foundation on the effects of presidential and regulatory tariffs.
The overall cost to the state is $20 billion, with automobile imports hit the hardest, according to the report.
The state has the fourth highest impact from tariffs, behind California, Texas and Michigan.
Tariffs have driven up the cost of almost everything, Bryan Riley, director of the National Taxpayers Union’s Free Trade Initiative, said on a recent edition of The Center Square’s news show “The States.”
Some products are affected more than others, Riley said.
But costs aren’t driven up uniformly, Riley said. Tariffs impact some goods more than others.
“In some cases, it’s a big chunk. For clothing, it's a big chunk. In other cases, it’s kind of like getting nickel and dimed. Everything, almost everything, costs a little bit more, and it’s a policy that really hurts those lower income households the most, who are least able to afford the cost of the tariffs,” Riley said.

The president announced on Aug. 24 that 50% tariffs would be imposed on all Canadian cars, trucks, auto parts and steel on Jan. 1. A 50% tariff on Canadian steel is already in effect.
