Rensselaer County, NY – A registered sex offender is being held without bail after Rensselaer County investigators arrested him on two felony charges, including attempted first degree sexual abuse involving a juvenile, authorities announced.
According to the Rensselaer County Sheriff ’s Office, members of its Criminal Investigation Unit arrested 53 year old J. Mann of Berlin on Thursday, Oct. 1.
The sheriff’s office said Mann was charged with attempted sexual abuse in the first degree, a felony, following an investigation into an incident allegedly involving a juvenile.
Authorities did not provide additional information about the alleged incident or the juvenile involved.
Investigators also charged Mann with failure to verify as a sex offender — first offense, another felony.
According to the sheriff’s office, Mann is a registered sex offender, and investigators determined that he allegedly failed to comply with annual verification requirements.
Following his arrest, Mann was arraigned in Berlin Town Court.
The sheriff’s office said the court ordered Mann held without bail and remanded him to the Rensselaer County Jail.
Rensselaer County includes communities east of Albany in New York’s Capital Region. Berlin is located in the eastern portion of the county near the Massachusetts border.
The sheriff’s office did not provide additional information about future court proceedings in its initial announcement.
The charges and allegations against Mann are accusations. He is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in court.
