Racine County, WI – A Green Bay area woman faces multiple charges after authorities say they intercepted drugs allegedly intended for an inmate at Racine Correctional Institution during a late September investigation.
According to the Racine County Sheriff 's Office, Metro Drug Unit agents were notified Sept. 24 that inmate Tavaun Love, 25, and visitor Jamellia Brown, 29, were suspected of exchanging narcotics during visits. Investigators said recorded telephone calls provided information that Brown allegedly planned to bring additional drugs during a Sept. 29 visit.
Authorities said deputies and drug unit agents spotted Brown driving toward the correctional institution Sept. 29 and conducted a traffic stop. Her 3 year old son was also in the vehicle.
A K9 alerted to the presence of narcotics during an open air sniff, according to the sheriff's office. Investigators said a subsequent search uncovered Schedule IV narcotics, marijuana vape cartridges, an electronic conducted weapon and several plastic bags with corners removed.
Authorities said suspected cocaine was also allegedly discovered on Brown when she was taken to the Racine County Jail.
Metro agents worked with Child Protective Services to reunite the child with his grandmother, the sheriff's office said.
Brown was charged in Racine County with possession of cocaine as a second or subsequent offense, possession of THC as a second or subsequent offense, possession of an electric weapon, possession of a controlled substance and possessing or illegally obtaining a prescription.
Authorities also forwarded charging recommendations involving Love to the Racine County District Attorney's Office.
Sheriff Christopher Schmaling said investigators intercepted the suspected narcotics before they could enter the correctional institution. The allegations remain subject to the court process.
