Eloy, AZ – An Interstate 10 traffic stop in Pinal County led Arizona troopers to approximately 100 pounds of suspected fentanyl, including dozens of pounds of pills and powder, state authorities announced Wednesday.
According to the Arizona Department of Public Safety, an AZDPS Canine District trooper stopped a Ford pickup truck Sept. 26 for alleged civil traffic violations while the vehicle was traveling eastbound on I 10 near Eloy, southeast of the Phoenix metro area.
During the stop, the trooper noticed indicators of possible criminal activity and searched the vehicle, authorities said.
Troopers allegedly discovered approximately 51 pounds of fentanyl powder and 49 pounds of fentanyl pills. The drugs were seized as part of the investigation.
The driver was arrested and booked into the Pinal County Jail on charges that include possession and transportation of a narcotic drug for sale, according to AZDPS. Authorities did not identify the driver in Wednesday's announcement.
A juvenile passenger who was traveling in the pickup was turned over to the Arizona Department of Child Safety.
The Pinal Narcotics Squad and troopers assigned to AZDPS Highway Patrol District 6 assisted with the investigation.
The seizure highlights the role of Interstate 10, a major transportation corridor running through southern and central Arizona. State police did not disclose the suspected fentanyl's estimated street value or intended destination.
The charges against the driver are allegations, and the defendant is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
