Trenton, NY — A 56 year old man was killed Thursday night after being struck by a vehicle while walking along State Route 12 in Oneida County, prompting a police investigation and a temporary highway closure.
According to Oneida County Sheriff Robert Maciol, deputies were dispatched around 10:15 p.m. Thursday, October 8, to the area of State Route 12 and Mappa Avenue in the town of Trenton after receiving reports of an adult male walking in the roadway.
While responding to the initial 911 call, deputies received additional reports that a pedestrian had been struck by a vehicle in the same area.
Upon arrival, authorities discovered a deceased man in the southbound lane of Route 12.
The victim was identified as Aaron Sosnowski, 56, of Trenton, New York.
Preliminary findings indicate Sosnowski was walking in the middle of the southbound lane when he was struck by a white 2018 GMC utility van traveling south.
Authorities identified the driver as Tyreke Baxter, 24, of Watertown, New York.
According to investigators, Baxter stopped immediately after the collision, called 911 and remained at the scene until law enforcement arrived.
The sheriff's Criminal Investigation Unit and Forensic Identification Unit responded to assist with the investigation.
State Route 12 was closed while deputies conducted crash reconstruction work and examined the circumstances surrounding the fatal collision.
The New York State Police, Barneveld Fire Department and Onondaga County Medical Examiner's Office also assisted.
Authorities have not announced any charges or identified additional contributing factors.
The sheriff's office emphasized that the investigation remains ongoing.
Officials have not provided further information regarding the circumstances that led Sosnowski to be walking in the roadway.
