Toledo, OH – A hazardous materials emergency near the Ohio Michigan border has prompted a reported Federal Aviation Administration FAA no fly zone over North Toledo on Wednesday, Oct. 21, 2026, as the threat of another explosion continues at a leaking chemical tank. Evacuation and shelter in place restrictions remain reported around the incident site.
According to an emergency update crews are maintaining their distance from a tank at MC Tank Transport on Progress Avenue because of the potential for another explosion. The tank continues releasing glycidyl methacrylate, while the cause of the initial blast remains under investigation.
FAA No Fly Zone Extends 3.5 Miles Near Michigan Border
The reported FAA temporary flight restriction covers a 3.5 mile radius around the chemical release site, extending across portions of North Toledo near the Michigan state line.
The restriction reportedly extends from ground level to 1,000 feet and remains in effect until 12:31 p.m. EDT Thursday, Oct. 22.
Drone operations are prohibited within the designated restricted airspace.
Explosion Risk Keeps Emergency Crews Away
Emergency personnel are reportedly staying back from the leaking tank because of concerns that another explosion could occur.
Glycidyl methacrylate is an industrial chemical that can pose health and safety hazards.
Officials have not established when the chemical release will be contained or when normal operations can resume.
Evacuation and Shelter Orders Remain Reported
The emergency map identifies a 1 mile evacuation zone surrounding the release site and a 3 mile shelter in place zone extending into nearby neighborhoods.
Residents within the evacuation area are directed to leave, while those sheltering in place are instructed to remain indoors, close windows and doors, shut off ventilation drawing outside air, and keep pets inside.
