NWS Issues Severe Thunderstorm Watch for Buffalo Region Tonight

Buffalo, NY – The National Weather Service (NWS) in Buffalo has issued a severe thunderstorm watch for portions of the Lake Erie region and the western Southern Tier, effective through 11:00 p.m. on Wednesday, September 9, 2026. While officials noted the atmosphere is currently less prolific than previous storms, the potential for severe weather remains a significant concern.

Residents are advised that the primary hazards associated with the incoming storms include damaging straight-line winds, which could reach gusts up to 65 mph, and heavy, torrential downpours. The NWS also indicated that frequent lightning is anticipated, and they have not ruled out the possibility of an isolated tornado.

The watch covers a wide area, with weather data indicating potential impacts across the region. Officials noted that additional thunderstorms could develop elsewhere in the area throughout the evening, though they are expected to remain sub-severe. Nevertheless, the public is urged to monitor local forecasts closely.

"Monitor the weather and have a plan of action if severe weather strikes your area!" the NWS Buffalo office advised. The map provided by the service indicates that over 6 million people, 2,283 schools, and 148 hospitals fall within the potential exposure zone for this weather system.

Emergency management personnel suggest that residents secure any loose outdoor items and remain indoors once the weather begins to deteriorate. Updates will be issued by the NWS as the situation evolves throughout the night.
