Aurora, IL – Drivers across Illinois are being urged to watch for deer on roadways this fall as mating season increases the potential for unexpected animal crossings, particularly during early morning and evening commutes.
According to the Aurora Police Department , the Illinois Department of Transportation has issued a seasonal safety reminder warning motorists that deer mating season continues through December, bringing increased concerns for drivers on rural roads, suburban streets and even urban routes.
Deer Activity Creates Hazards Across Illinois Roads
Authorities emphasize that deer are not limited to wooded areas or remote highways. They can unexpectedly appear along busy suburban corridors and city streets, including throughout Aurora, Kane County and the greater Chicago metropolitan area.
Drivers should exercise additional caution around dawn and dusk, when deer are especially active and visibility may be reduced.
Police recommend watching roadsides for movement and the reflection of deer eyes in vehicle headlights.
One Deer Could Mean More Are Nearby
Motorists who encounter a deer should slow down immediately and remain alert for additional animals.
Deer frequently travel in groups, meaning another animal may enter the roadway shortly after the first crosses.
Drivers should also anticipate that deer may suddenly stop in traffic rather than continue moving across the road.
Authorities specifically warn against swerving to avoid a deer because abrupt steering could send vehicles into oncoming traffic or off the roadway.
What Drivers Should Do After a Collision
If a vehicle strikes a deer, Aurora Police advise motorists to pull over safely, activate hazard lights and call 911.
Drivers should remain inside their vehicles rather than approaching an injured deer or attempting to move the animal.
With deer mating season continuing through December, transportation officials encourage Illinois motorists to remain alert throughout the fall driving season.
A few additional seconds of caution could help prevent a serious collision.
