DEKALB, IL — Drivers across Illinois are being warned to prepare for increased impaired driving enforcement as Halloween approaches. Beginning Friday, Oct. 23, law enforcement agencies will participate in a holiday safety campaign targeting motorists who drive under the influence of alcohol, cannabis or other impairing substances.
According to the DeKalb County Sheriff 's Office, the enforcement campaign will run from Oct. 23 through Nov. 2, 2026 , as authorities work to reduce impaired driving and encourage seat belt use during Halloween celebrations.
The initiative is part of the statewide “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” and “Drive High. Get a DUI” campaigns, supported by the Illinois Department of Transportation and Illinois State Police.
Increased Enforcement During Halloween Celebrations
Halloween weekend often brings parties, late night gatherings and additional traffic as residents travel between celebrations.
The DeKalb County Sheriff's Office says motorists should expect an emphasis on identifying impaired drivers and encouraging seat belt compliance.
“Alcohol and cannabis impair your ability to drive safely,” Lt. Ryan Pettengell said in the department's announcement.
He urged residents to arrange transportation before attending celebrations rather than making decisions after consuming alcohol or cannabis.
Cannabis Can Also Lead to DUI Charges
Authorities are reminding Illinois motorists that impaired driving laws are not limited to alcohol.
Although recreational cannabis is legal for adults in Illinois, operating a vehicle while impaired by cannabis remains illegal.
Drivers can face DUI charges for impairment involving alcohol, cannabis or other drugs.
The sheriff's office also emphasized that all vehicle occupants must wear seat belts or risk receiving a citation.
Safety Tips for Halloween Weekend
Law enforcement officials recommend taking several precautions before heading out:
Arrange a designated sober driver before attending parties. Use a rideshare service, public transportation or a sober friend for transportation. Never drive after consuming impairing substances. Wear a seat belt on every trip. Avoid walking home while impaired without a sober companion. Report suspected impaired drivers to law enforcement when it is safe to do so. Residents are also encouraged to intervene safely when someone who appears impaired attempts to drive.
Statewide Campaign Continues Into November
The enforcement effort is funded through federal highway safety grants administered by IDOT and supported by participating law enforcement agencies across Illinois.
The campaigns reinforce the state's “It's Not a Game” traffic safety initiative.
For drivers traveling throughout DeKalb County, the Chicago suburbs and other Illinois communities, the message is straightforward: plan a sober ride before Halloween celebrations begin.
The increased enforcement campaign is scheduled to conclude Monday, Nov. 2.
