Siskiyou County, CA – A traffic stop along Interstate 5 in Northern California led to the discovery of more than a ton of allegedly illegal marijuana inside a U Haul trailer, resulting in the arrest of a 36 year old driver, according to authorities.
According to the Siskiyou County Sheriff 's Office, the incident occurred Wednesday, Oct. 21, when a sheriff's sergeant traveling northbound on Interstate 5 noticed a truck towing a U Haul trailer and allegedly driving erratically.
Deputy Discovers Dozens of Bags After initiating a traffic stop, the sergeant contacted the driver, identified as Omar Jacob Gonzalez, 36, and conducted a probable cause search of the truck and trailer.
Inside the trailer, authorities discovered dozens of large black bags containing what investigators identified as marijuana.
The sheriff's office said the bags lacked the required certifications identifying legally regulated cannabis products.
A subsequent count determined the trailer contained approximately 2,254 pounds of marijuana, which authorities described as black market cannabis.
Driver Arrested on Marijuana Charges Gonzalez was arrested on suspicion of violating California Health and Safety Code Sections 11360 A and 11359 B , involving the transportation and possession of marijuana allegedly cultivated illegally.
He was subsequently booked into the Siskiyou County Jail.
The sheriff's office released photographs showing numerous large black bags stacked inside the trailer, along with the U Haul and patrol vehicle involved in the stop.
Interstate 5 Seizure Draws Attention Interstate 5 is a major transportation corridor connecting California with Oregon and Washington, making the highway significant for commercial and interstate travel.
