Eureka, CA — Powerful ocean swells could send unexpected waves rushing across Northern California beaches Sunday and Monday, October 11 12. Beachgoers face dangerous conditions as sneaker waves threaten to sweep people into the ocean without warning.
According to the National Weather Service in Eureka, a Beach Hazards Statement remains in effect from 4 a.m. Sunday through Monday afternoon. The alert covers coastal Del Norte, northern and southwestern Humboldt, and Mendocino counties.
Forecasters warn that a very long period westerly swell will increase the threat of sneaker waves along exposed beaches.
These unusually powerful waves can travel much farther inland than surrounding surf, catching visitors off guard.
The Weather Service warns that waves could sweep people from rocks, jetties and beaches. Large waves may also move heavy logs, potentially crushing anyone caught underneath.
Officials urge beach visitors to avoid rocks and jetties, stay away from steep beaches and never turn their backs on the ocean.
Sunday's weather adds another concern.
Eureka should experience sunny skies and temperatures near 56 degrees, but north winds could gust as high as 30 mph.
Sunday night remains mostly clear and breezy, with temperatures falling to approximately 44 degrees.
Columbus Day, Monday, October 12, brings sunshine and a high near 57 degrees. However, dangerous surf conditions could continue through the afternoon despite improving winds.
Visitors planning holiday beach trips should remain cautious even when the ocean appears calm.
Tuesday brings sunshine and temperatures near 57 degrees, followed by partly cloudy overnight conditions.
The five day outlook includes Wednesday highs near 59 degrees, Thursday around 63 and Friday near 61.
Saturday should remain partly sunny, with temperatures near 59 degrees.
Although inland weather remains relatively quiet, dangerous ocean conditions represent the region's most immediate public safety concern.
