North Platte, NE – Residents across a large portion of Nebraska are being urged to prepare for freezing temperatures this weekend, with overnight lows potentially dropping to 30 degrees Saturday morning, October 17. The approaching cold could threaten crops, gardens and exposed outdoor plumbing.
According to the National Weather Service in North Platte, a Freeze Watch was issued at 1 p.m. CDT Thursday, October 15, covering 18 counties across central, north central, southwest and west central Nebraska.
The watch takes effect late Friday night and continues through Saturday morning as temperatures could fall below freezing across the affected region.
18 Nebraska Counties Under Freeze Watch
The affected counties include Eastern Cherry, Keya Paha, Boyd, Brown, Rock, Holt, Hooker, Thomas, Blaine, Loup, Garfield, Wheeler, McPherson, Logan, Custer, Lincoln, Hayes and Frontier.
Communities under the watch include North Platte, Valentine, Broken Bow, O'Neill, Ainsworth, Bassett, Burwell, Mullen, Thedford, Curtis and Hayes Center.
Residents throughout these areas should prepare for potentially damaging cold conditions before Friday night.
Why Temperatures Near 30 Degrees Matter
Even a brief period below 32 degrees can damage sensitive vegetation, particularly gardens and crops that remain exposed during the autumn growing season.
The National Weather Service warns that frost and freezing conditions could kill vulnerable plants and potentially damage unprotected outdoor plumbing.
How Residents Can Prepare
Homeowners should consider bringing tender plants indoors or covering them before temperatures fall.
Residents should also protect exposed water pipes by wrapping them, draining outdoor water lines or allowing vulnerable faucets to drip slowly when appropriate.
Agricultural producers should monitor updated forecasts for possible impacts on remaining crops.
A Freeze Watch means freezing conditions are possible but not yet certain. The watch could be upgraded to a Freeze Warning as forecast confidence increases.
The watch is scheduled from 1 a.m. to 9 a.m. CDT Saturday , corresponding to midnight through 8 a.m. MDT in areas observing Mountain Time.
