CAMBRIA, NY – A 42 year old Cub Scout leader in western New York has been arrested after investigators say she allegedly used more than $9,000 belonging to a local scouting pack for personal expenses, following complaints from parents about money that had been collected but never properly accounted for.
According to the Niagara County Sheriff 's Office, Carol A. Thurnherr, 42, of Cambria, was arrested Thursday, Oct. 15, following an investigation involving Scouting America Cub Scout Pack No. 824.
Investigators determined that Thurnherr allegedly misused more than $9,000 in pack funds while serving as the organization's Cubmaster.
Authorities said multiple parents of children participating in the scouting pack came forward with concerns about fundraising money and other collected funds.
Parents reportedly described numerous instances in which money had been collected but was never recorded or paid out as expected.
The complaints prompted an investigation by the Niagara County Sheriff's Office Criminal Investigation Bureau.
Following what authorities described as a lengthy investigation, detectives concluded that Thurnherr allegedly used the organization's money for her personal benefit.
Grand Larceny Charge Filed
Thurnherr was arrested and charged with third degree grand larceny, a felony under New York law.
She was transported to the Niagara County Correctional Facility and held for arraignment in Centralized Arraignment Part Court.
Authorities said Thurnherr was assigned a future appearance in the Town of Cambria Court.
The sheriff's release did not specify how long the alleged misuse occurred, how the funds were spent or whether any money had been recovered.
The case has raised concerns involving funds collected for a youth scouting organization serving families in the Cambria area of Niagara County, northeast of Buffalo.
Officials have not announced additional arrests or charges in connection with the investigation.
Thurnherr is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in court.
