Federal regulators on Aug. 13 announced a recall of Shengsen Prank Sound Makers after finding that children can access the small lithium coin batteries inside, posing a serious ingestion hazard. According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission, the sound makers violate the mandatory safety standard for consumer products that contain button cell and coin batteries. The agency says the devices — imported by Shengsen Toys — allow easy access to the batteries, and both the product and its packaging lack the warning labels required under Reese's Law. When button cell or coin batteries are swallowed, the CPSC warns, the batteries can cause severe internal chemical burns, serious injuries and even death. The recall notice does not list specific retailers or lot numbers; consumers were urged to stop using the toys immediately and keep them away from young children. Shengsen Toys is offering a refund or replacement for the recalled sound makers. The CPSC advises owners to contact the company directly to arrange a remedy; the recall notice contains the official contact information and additional details. If a child may have swallowed a battery or is showing symptoms such as coughing, difficulty breathing, drooling or vomiting, seek emergency medical care right away. The commission classified the hazard as chemical and said the action is necessary to protect children from life threatening injuries.
