Morgan County, IN – A 63 year old man has been arrested and returned to Indiana after an undercover online investigation led to several preliminary charges involving alleged communications with someone he believed was a minor.
According to the Morgan County Sheriff’s Office, Detective Sgt. Patrick Williams conducted the investigation using an undercover decoy in an online chat environment. Authorities said the investigator posed as a minor during the communications.
The sheriff’s office alleges the suspect engaged in communications with the undercover investigator that ultimately led detectives to identify him as Rodney Williams, 63.
Following the investigation, Williams was located in Kentucky and taken into custody with assistance from law enforcement agencies there. He was extradited to Indiana on Monday, Sept. 28.
Authorities said Williams is preliminarily charged with child solicitation, sexual grooming and dissemination of matter harmful to a minor.
The sheriff’s office did not provide additional details Tuesday about the alleged online conversations or disclose how long the undercover investigation had been underway.
The department credited the Kentucky State Police Internet Crimes Against Children Unit and the Louisville Metro Police Department Fugitive Unit with helping locate Williams and move the investigation forward.
Morgan County authorities said their office participates in Indiana’s Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force, which works with law enforcement agencies in Indiana and across the country on investigations involving the alleged use of technology and online platforms to target children.
The charges against Williams are preliminary allegations. He is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in court.
