Monroe County, IL – A traffic stop in southwestern Illinois has developed into a criminal investigation spanning three counties, with two Wilsonville residents facing multiple felony charges involving suspected methamphetamine, firearms and property allegedly stolen during a residential burglary.
According to the Monroe County Sheriff 's Department, an investigator with its Aggressive Criminal Enforcement Unit initiated a traffic stop around 12:34 p.m. Monday, October 19, after observing a traffic violation.
During the encounter, investigators developed reasonable suspicion of additional criminal activity and subsequently established probable cause to search the vehicle.
The search uncovered suspected illegal narcotics and a firearm, leading to the arrests of both occupants.
Authorities identified the defendants as Joseph R. Peach, 48, and Kara M. Burrow, 40, both of Wilsonville, Illinois.
Investigators later connected property recovered during the traffic stop to a residential burglary in Randolph County that reportedly occurred earlier Monday between 8 a.m. and 2 p.m.
Among the recovered items was a firearm authorities confirmed had been stolen during that burglary.
The investigation also uncovered evidence potentially connecting the defendants to a separate crime in Madison County, according to the sheriff's department.
On Wednesday, October 21, Monroe County State's Attorney Ryan Webb authorized five felony charges against Peach, including Category I armed violence, unlawful possession of a weapon by a felon, unlawful possession of methamphetamine, unlawful possession of a controlled substance and possession of a stolen firearm.
Burrow faces four felony charges, including Category I armed violence, unlawful possession of methamphetamine, unlawful possession of a controlled substance and possession of a stolen firearm.
Both defendants remained in custody at the Monroe County Jail when authorities issued their Thursday announcement.
Sheriff Neal Rohlfing credited cooperation between Monroe, Randolph and Madison county investigators with uncovering the additional connections.
The investigation remains ongoing. Both defendants are presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
