Monroe County, GA – A traffic stop along Interstate 75 turned into a vehicle and foot pursuit Monday night, ending with a Florida man jailed without bond and deputies investigating a suspected attempt to use a drone to deliver contraband into a correctional facility.
According to the Monroe County Sheriff ’s Office, deputies attempted to stop a vehicle on I 75 near Exit 188 at approximately 8:35 p.m. Monday. Authorities allege the driver fled the interstate and continued toward Collier Road and L. Cary Bittick Drive.
The sheriff’s office said the driver eventually stopped the vehicle and allegedly ran away on foot. After what authorities described as a brief foot pursuit, deputies apprehended the driver.
Authorities identified the man as Demitri Dotson of Homestead, Florida.
Dotson was arrested and charged with fleeing or attempting to elude, reckless driving, obstruction of an officer, multiple traffic violations, possession of synthetic marijuana, possession of tools during the commission of a crime and drug trafficking, according to the sheriff’s office.
Deputies also reported finding a large unmanned aerial vehicle, commonly called a drone, in Dotson’s possession.
Based on the drone, other items seized and the way those items were allegedly packaged, investigators suspect Dotson was attempting to introduce contraband into a correctional facility through what authorities commonly refer to as a “prison drop.”
The sheriff’s office did not identify the correctional facility allegedly targeted or provide additional details about the seized items in its initial announcement.
Dotson remained in the Monroe County Jail without bond as of Tuesday’s update. The charges are allegations, and the case has not resulted in a conviction.
