Marquette, Michigan – Temperatures could fall to 30 degrees early Tuesday across parts of Upper Michigan, threatening crops, sensitive plants and outdoor plumbing.
According to the National Weather Service in Marquette, a Freeze Warning is in effect from 2 a.m. to 9 a.m. EDT Tuesday for Baraga, Iron and southern Houghton counties. In areas observing CDT, the warning runs from 1 a.m. to 8 a.m.
Subfreezing temperatures as low as 30 degrees are expected within the warning area. Communities specifically included in the alert include L'Anse, Iron River, Kenton and Sidnaw.
Frost and freezing conditions could kill crops and other sensitive vegetation. Unprotected outdoor plumbing could also sustain damage as temperatures fall below freezing.
Residents should protect tender plants before temperatures drop overnight. The Weather Service also recommends wrapping or draining exposed water pipes or allowing them to drip slowly to reduce the risk of freezing.
Property owners with in ground sprinkler systems should drain them and cover above ground pipes before the coldest conditions arrive.
The warning remains in effect through 9 a.m. EDT, or 8 a.m. CDT, Tuesday. Temperatures should become less hazardous after the morning freeze period ends.
