McHenry County, IL – Illinois residents preparing for snowmobile season have three opportunities to complete free safety training this winter, with the first class scheduled for Saturday, Nov. 21, through the McHenry County Sheriff 's Office.
According to the McHenry County Sheriff's Office, the department is partnering with the Illinois Department of Natural Resources to offer three snowmobile safety courses designed to help riders understand safe operation, state laws and responsible winter recreation.
The classes are scheduled for Saturday, Nov. 21, Saturday, Dec. 19, and Saturday, Jan. 9, 2027.
Each session will run from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the McHenry County Sheriff's Office.
All three courses are free and open to the public.
Under Illinois snowmobile safety requirements described by the Sheriff's Office, residents ages 12 through 16, along with individuals who do not possess a valid driver's license, must complete an approved snowmobile safety course before operating a snowmobile.
The training covers several important topics, including safe snowmobile operation, rules of the road, Illinois snowmobile laws, first aid and proper riding techniques.
Participants will also learn practices intended to reduce the risk of accidents while operating snowmobiles on designated trails and other permitted riding areas.
The Sheriff's Office is encouraging interested residents to register ahead of the winter riding season.
Although the classes are being hosted in McHenry County, the training opportunity is open to Illinois residents beyond the immediate area.
With colder weather approaching, officials are emphasizing the importance of preparation before riders head onto snow covered trails.
Residents interested in attending can find additional information and reserve a seat through the Sheriff's Office's official registration page.
