Rising Sun, MD – A small earthquake was recorded near Rising Sun early Wednesday morning, marking a measurable seismic event in Cecil County near the Maryland Pennsylvania border.
According to earthquake monitoring information shown in the Earthquake Alert live feed, the event registered a magnitude of 1.7 and occurred at a depth of approximately 5 kilometers, or about 3.1 miles. The feed identified the location as Rising Sun, Maryland, and classified it as a tectonic earthquake.
The event was listed as having occurred approximately four hours before an 8:58 a.m. update Wednesday, placing it during the early morning hours.
Instrumental shaking information displayed with the event indicated the earthquake was estimated as “not felt.” A magnitude 1.7 earthquake is relatively small, and the information shown did not indicate significant shaking or impacts.
Rising Sun is in Cecil County in northeastern Maryland, roughly between Baltimore and Philadelphia and close to the Pennsylvania state line. Because of that location, information about even a minor earthquake may draw interest from residents across the surrounding Maryland Pennsylvania region.
The earthquake’s magnitude and depth are measured characteristics of the seismic event and should not be confused with how strongly residents may have experienced shaking. The displayed information separates observed measurements from estimated shaking and public reports.
No damage or injuries were indicated in the information available Wednesday morning.
Residents who believe they experienced shaking should note the approximate time and location of their experience and monitor official earthquake information for updated measurements or reports.
