CHARLES COUNTY, MD – Multiple students at a Southern Maryland high school are expected to face criminal charges after two separate fights erupted just days apart, leaving a teacher injured and prompting police intervention at Henry E. Lackey High School.
According to the Charles County Sheriff 's Office, investigators are examining two assault incidents involving students between the ages of 14 and 16 that occurred Monday, Oct. 5, and Thursday, Oct. 8.
The most recent incident occurred at approximately 11:28 a.m. Thursday when a fight broke out inside the school's cafeteria during lunch.
Authorities said an altercation between two students quickly escalated as additional students joined the confrontation.
School administrators, teachers and the school resource officer intervened, while additional law enforcement officers responded to help restore order.
No serious injuries were reported during Thursday's incident.
The confrontation followed an earlier fight Monday involving seven students inside the same school.
Investigators said that incident began when one student was struck from behind, triggering a larger altercation involving multiple students.
A teacher attempting to intervene was struck during the confrontation and required medical attention.
One student also sustained minor injuries.
The sheriff's office confirmed that students involved in both incidents will face criminal charges.
Those students are also expected to receive disciplinary consequences under the Charles County Public Schools student code of conduct.
Authorities have not specified the exact criminal charges or the total number of students who will be charged across both incidents.
The two confrontations occurred within four days of each other, raising concerns about student safety and the risks faced by school employees attempting to break up fights.
Police First Class Officer Barry is continuing the investigation.
Additional information about the cases has not yet been released.
