Marion County, OR – Residents warned of jury duty scams

Marion County, Oregon – The Marion County Sheriff's Office is issuing a formal scam alert following reports of individuals fraudulently posing as deputies in ongoing phone scams. Authorities state that callers have been contacting residents with claims that they must pay fines for missing jury duty.

According to the sheriff's office, these scammers often spoof caller ID information to display the office's name or use the names of actual employees to build credibility. Officials stressed that the sheriff’s department will never call residents to demand payment for missed jury duty or threaten arrest for such an absence.

The department emphasized that missing jury duty does not result in an arrest warrant. In the event of a legitimate warrant, deputies would serve notice in person rather than over the phone. Officials also warned the public to be suspicious of any request for payment via untraceable methods such as Bitcoin, gift cards, or meeting at public locations like gas stations or kiosks.

Residents are advised to exercise caution and trust their instincts if a phone interaction feels suspicious. If contacted by someone claiming to represent the office, individuals are encouraged to hang up and call the non-emergency line directly at 503-588-5032. Staying informed about these common scam tactics is essential for maintaining public safety in the region.
