Washington, D.C. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission on Aug. 27 reannounced a recall of Mainstays nine drawer fabric dressers sold at Walmart, warning consumers to stop using the furniture because it can tip over and trap children, causing serious injury or death.
According to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, the dressers are unstable if not anchored to a wall and fail to meet the mandatory safety requirements established by the STURDY Act. The agency said some recalled units were distributed by Walmart after the initial recall and that additional units were sold to consumers through liquidators.
The recall covers the nine drawer fabric dressers sold under the Mainstays brand at Walmart stores and online. CPSC’s notice did not include item numbers or UPCs in this announcement; consumers who own the dresser should check their purchase records and product markings to confirm whether their unit matches the recalled style.
CPSC and Walmart advise stopping use of the dresser immediately and keeping children away from the product. The agency cautioned that unsecured dressers can fall forward when drawers are opened, creating an entrapment and crush risk.
Affected shoppers are instructed to contact the manufacturer for information about refunds or replacements. Consumers should also follow any anchoring instructions provided with the product; however, the agency emphasized that anchoring does not resolve the fact the product violates the STURDY Act safety standard.
Retailers that received recalled stock after the initial recall are being urged to remove the dressers from sale and notify customers. Anyone who believes they have a recalled dresser or who has experienced an incident should contact CPSC.
