MACOMB TOWNSHIP, MI – An infant has died following a devastating head on collision Thursday morning in Macomb County, where emergency responders performed lifesaving measures before the child was transported to a hospital.
According to the Macomb County Sheriff 's Office, deputies responded to a two vehicle crash at approximately 11:08 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 8, at the intersection of 25 Mile Road and Petunia Drive in Macomb Township, northeast of Detroit.
Preliminary findings indicate a gray Ford Bronco Sport was traveling westbound on 25 Mile Road when its driver attempted to turn south onto Petunia Drive.
During the turn, the Bronco reportedly entered the path of a white Ford F 350 traveling eastbound on 25 Mile Road. The vehicles collided head on.
Authorities said an infant secured in a child safety seat in the rear passenger area of the Bronco was found unresponsive following the collision.
Good Samaritans at the scene immediately began performing CPR before deputies and Macomb Township Fire Department personnel arrived and continued lifesaving efforts.
The infant was transported to an area hospital and later transferred to a higher level trauma center. Despite emergency medical treatment, the child died from injuries sustained in the crash.
The Bronco's driver, a 35 year old woman from Chesterfield, and the F 350's driver, a 35 year old man from Macomb Township, reported minor injuries.
The Macomb County Sheriff's Office Crash Investigation Team responded to investigate the circumstances surrounding the collision.
Investigators said alcohol is not believed to have contributed to the crash.
The investigation remains ongoing, and authorities have not announced any citations or charges.
The sheriff's office extended its deepest sympathies to the infant's family and loved ones following the tragedy.
